Catherine Ford was born in Bloomsbury, London; her father had left the family, so she was taken care of by her mother, grandmother and godparents. Ford was suffering from anxiety disorder based on word associations as a young child. Ford was first fascinated by acting as a teenager and joined the National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted to Sylvia Young Theatre School but after just one week she realized that she didn't fit in. Ford returned to Central School of Speech and Drama and, after her fourth application she was admitted. Shaun Dingwall played Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford was able to graduate in 1993. She already made a TV appearance in a 1992 episode of Surgical Spirit. She adopted the title Catherine Tate. Tate was a part of such programs on television including The Bill, Men Behaving Badly, and London Burning. Apart from her regular performances in the theatre, Tate also joined in the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2000-2001. Tate was recognized for her comedy stand-up and became part of her resume in 1996.
